Joint Chief of Staff “Buck” Turgidson (George C. Scott) and

Air Force Strategic Commander Jack Ripper (Sterling Hayden),

who orders a bomber squadron to attack the USSR, triggering a Soviet secret weapon—the “Doomsday Machine,” a diabolical retaliatory missile system.
